Every party needs a statement piece and these no sew Rainbow Curtains make the perfect rainbow party backdrop!
Earlier this week I shared Bradlee’s Donut Bar Birthday Party with you and since then I have been asked one question over and over! Where did you get those rainbow curtains for your rainbow party backdrop? Well, the answer is… I made it! In about 20 minutes for approximately $10. Today I’m giving you the rundown so you can make a rainbow party backdrop, too!
Initially my plan was only to use garlands to decorate this area but the vision felt incomplete. However, time was short and the budget was small so I needed a really great statement piece that would make a major impact on minimal effort, preferably using materials I had on hand because I am all about a fabulous party on a budget!
My go-to decorating tool is a plastic, disposable table cloth! You can find these at the Dollar Tree and Walmart for $1… or Party City for a little more if you need very specific colors. I opted to use the colors of the rainbow with 2 shades of pink in place of red.
These no sew rainbow curtains were actually made from the tablecloth leftovers from the tassel garlands. For this particular rainbow party backdrop tutorial you will only use 1/2 of the tablecloth in 7 colors.
Here’s how it works!
Rainbow Party Backdrop: No Sew Rainbow Curtains
plastic rectangle tablecloths
2- 36″ wooden dowels
(Excuse the picture quality! This was one of those projects put off until late the night before the party so the lighting was not fantastic.)
1- Lay your tablecloth out lengthwise and cut in half.
2- Fold the top of the tablecloth down about 3 inches. (If your tablecloth has been folded you will see creases in the tablecloth and I folded to the first crease)
3- Using duct tape secure the fold. Make sure you tape to the very edges of the tablecloth so it will hang correctly on the rod.
4- Repeat this process for each color so you have 2 identical panels of each color.
5- Thread wooden dowel through each plastic tablecloth panel scrunching as you go.
6- Secure the first panel with duct tape so the panels do not fall off the dowel. I arranged the panels so they were mirror images of one another. (From the outside in: hot pink, light pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.)
7- Hang 2 Command strips approximately 33″ apart. Space 6″ over and hang remaining 2 command strips 33″ apart.
8- Hang dowels on the Command strips.
9- Tie back no sew rainbow curtains using twine or ribbon. I happened to have these lanterns hanging on either side of my curtains and I used them to secure the tie backs. However, you could use 2 more command hooks to secure tie backs if necessary.
I did not attach panels to one another but I was able to arrange the no sew rainbow curtains to look cohesive once it was hung on the Command hooks creating the perfect rainbow party backdrop.
Pretty easy, right? And the best part?
– 7 plastic tablecloths, using 1/2 @ .50 each
7 x .50= 3.50
-2 wooden dowels @ .99 each
2 x .99 = 1.98
-duct tape from craft closet @ free
-Command strip hooks @ 5.99 with 40% discount
5.99 x .40 = 3.59
TOTAL = $9.07
