I hope this week finds you rested and warm! We had a Snow Day yesterday… and got no snow. So sad! I was really hoping for snow since Whitlee is at such a great age to enjoy it (and of course it would have made for adorable pictures in my Happy Days. Oh well! Maybe I can find something else to be happy about.)
Relax, Recover, Rejuvenate
Once a year we send the Lees to my parents and head out for our annual weekend at a friend’s cabin (That view- I die! I could sit on the porch all day, every day). We eat really great food, sit by a really warm fire, have deep conversations, tears, and laughter with the dearest of friends, and go to bed before 10 every night. Did I mention I wear yoga pants the entire time and don’t even bother to pack make-up? It’s pretty amazing! (We never even bothered to take a group photo this year so please excuse the swollen prego-face I was rocking last year).
Applied Behavior Analysis, I love you!
You may not know this, but when you tell your child “First you have to… and then you can …” you are actually doing this fancy little thing called The Premack Principle with your child. A lifetime ago I had a few diplomas and certificates giving me permission to do all these fancy behavior programs with kids in my classroom. Today I find myself using those same tactics to shape my toddlers behavior. She’s pretty much a junk food-atarian (unlike her sister who is a crawling garbage disposal) so we’ve been working on it.
You may call it bribing… I call it a degree well-wasted. Either way, we have drank a lot of milk, eaten a bite of pizza, and one piece of pasta and it only cost me a few pieces of popcorn and 2 Smartees. As in 2 individual Smartees…not 2 packs. Although you would think I was spooning ice cream down her throat with the hubs concerns I’m “hyping her up on sugar” right before bedtime.
Maybe I should be sad about this little step of independence… but truly, it’s nice to have free hands. I still feed Bradlee in the morning and before bed, but during the day while I am trying to clean or Whitlee is taking advantage of Mama being distracted and sneaking 1,247 band-aids from the bathroom it’s nice to know Bradlee can (and will) feed herself. (PS- Don’t you wish you could rock that headband???)
I have absolutely no clue where she learned this particular smile… but it’s her go-to. People talk about smiling so hard their face could split open- I think this is what they mean.
Of all the things I want my kids to learn, imagining is at the top of the list! In the spirit of Snow Day we pulled out our Snowonder (you know I love that stuff) and had a big time burying and rescuing all our tiny Disney friends. Whitlee spent an inconceivable amount of time trying to convince Doc and Anna to hold hands. They weren’t as cooperative as she was hoping.
